Coral spawning may impact on crayfish catch rates for Atlantic cod. A paper published online in the online online edition of the journal Environmental Science and Technology (ESOT) demonstrates that the impact of marine plankton on Atlantic cod mortality has increased significantly over the last decade. Although the magnitude of this increase has not been fully estimated, the study highlights the importance of plankton in Atlantic cod food webs. "We hope this study helps inform current and future decisions about ocean management and fisheries management in the wild as well as to advance the understanding of the link between plankton mortality and fish species survival," explains the paper's lead author, Thomas E. Jones, a biological oceanographer at the Marine Mammal Institute at Washington State University in Corvallis, Washington. Jones began working on a previous study involving Pacific cod, spawning in Florida and Florida waters, in the mid-1990s, and in the years following the collapse of the fisheries of the 1990s. "In that study we found a significant increase in cod spawning biomass during the last decade," he says. "It was surprising to see that, even though the population had declined in some of the species, the species survival in some of those regions were increasing." Jones suspects that this increase in cod populations may reflect a broader problem of declining ocean resources. "People are concerned about sea surface temperatures and that the Atlantic is warming faster than in the rest of the world," he says. "What are we doing to adapt to the changing conditions?" But the research's conclusions are likely to be controversial for some marine biologists, especially ones who were unaware of the relationship between plankton mortality and cod fishery productivity. The current study, the authors say, is the first to compare the mortality of Atlantic cod in various habitats. "Preliminary analyses indicate that, under normal conditions, there is a strong correlation between the abundance of plankton and cod and, to a lesser extent, cod fisheries in a given area," says study leader Daniel L. Mays, a postdoctoral research associate at the Marine Mammal Institute at Washington State University. Mays conducted this research with a team of scientists led by Eurowid researcher Daniel K. Siegel, who works in the fisheries program at the Oceanography Institute at Florida State University. The scientists sequenced the DNA of cichlid cod, a fish with a long and narrow body that can swim on its head, using DNA-sequencing technologies in collaboration with researchers from NOAA Fisheries' Pacific Cod Laboratory. Using the data, the scientists examined the distribution of genetic variation between cichlid species and the extent to which those genetic characteristics were associated with the diversity of fish spawning sites.
